9/8/2022 - Red Flag Warning
It's going to be hot, but the race is on.
You may have heard that our area is under a red flag warning Friday and Saturday. This is because of the extreme heat and forecast winds creating very high fire danger. What this means for the race is that there is potential for the power companies to shut off the power in the area to help avoid additional fire risk. At Tri Fest, we are always prepared to go off grid. We have generators, gas and supplies for this. We also have been planning for the heat and have ordered extra ice for our aid stations.
If the power is shut off, we will loose running water in the park. You can help!
We have enough water for our racers and staff. We do not have the capacity to also provide ample water to friends/family/spectators and other park-goers. Please pack extra water for yourself and your people. We can't do it alone.
HALF IRON DISTANCE - We will also be setting up some extra tables on the edge of transition where the half-iron run comes through the park. If you'd like to set out some special need items before your race, you are allowed to put those items there. The volunteers in transition can point you in the right direction.
Last thing, there are absolutely NO FIRES ALLOWED and NO SMOKING. The only fire that is allowed in extreme fire danger are those that are gas powered with an on/off switch. Propane or butane fires are allowed but charcoal, wood, paper etc are not. We will be strictly enforcing this.
9/7/2022 9:00PM - ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. You can still sign up to race on site starting at 4PM on Friday. Please bring cash or check. Thanks!
9/7/2022 - Athlete Update #2 was sent at 10:00AM today. Check that out for more important updates.

We don't have the 2022 date just yet, but we will send you an email when we have it confirmed. It will either be the 2nd or 3rd weekend of September depending on park availability. Thanks!

Start List
9/1/2021 - Due to low volunteer numbers, the Half-Iron bike course will be 2 laps. The half (13.1 mile) and Olympic (10k) runs have changed to run along the lake instead of up the river. The sprint and super sprint courses are unchanged. New maps are posted on the course pages and an email has been sent to all participants registered in the half and olympic courses. Thank you!
8/20/2021 - T-4weeks. We are still a go. As the nature of the pandemic changes, we have the flexibility to adjust thanks to an excellent partnership with the Linn County Parks and Rec department. We have fully approved COVID plans from last year that if needed, we can use this year. Right now, we are planning to proceed as normal. We will adhere to the recommendations from the CDC and OHA for social distancing, mask requirements and capacity limits. We will keep our normal courses unless capacity limits our ability to have adequate volunteers, which we do not anticipate at this time. If you would like to review our COVID plans from 2020, they are archived on our site here. We have ordered shirts, medals, awards, food, the works! We are ready to race, even if we have to make some last minute changes. Our normal roll over policy is in place, so if you are wanting to roll, we are now in the 75% roll window. We will also have a virtual option if you would prefer to race from home this year. We look forward to finally seeing our racers!
7/6/2021 - THE RACE IS ON!!!!! LIVE, IN-PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!
1/26/2021 - The date for the 2021 races are September 17-19. As of now, we are planning the same COVID race as 2020 and that information is available under the COVID Race Info page. If you would like to race whether the race is virtual, hybrid or in-person, feel free to sign up now. Otherwise, please wait. Thanks! At this time, we are not planning to offer the kids race or mixed team relay. If this changes, we will post an update here.
12/7/2020 - The upcoming vaccine sounds promising for the return of events in 2021. We have dates set for some of our events and registration is open, but we will not be able to confirm any events until the respective permitting agencies give us the ok to continue with planning. Tri Fest will either be the second or third weekend of September. We will send email notifications and update our websites as we hear about each event. Thank you for your patience and support!

9/18/20 - We are at the lake to mark the course for virtual racers this weekend. The buoys will be ready for swimmers at 9am Saturday. We will open the gate at that time. We can’t mark the roads until they are dry, so if you can, come on Sunday as that’s the better day weather wise to participate. We will also be here Monday. Please check our Facebook page for updates and times. You don’t need to be a member of Facebook to view our page. Thanks all!
9/10/2020 - Upload your results on the results page or through this google form.
9/9/2020 - The smoke has forced us to go virtual.
8/28/2020 - We are 2 weeks out and all systems are a go! Unless there is a large COVID-19 breakout in Sweet Home or Linn County moves to phase 1, we are ON for a live, in-person race!!! Time to sign up!
8/10/2020 - Things are looking good! We are feeling positive and excited for a race this year. While the nature of the pandemic is still unpredictable, we are forging ahead with plans for an in-person race. You can read the plans here. Our pre-registered racers and wait-listers are registering now. We will open up registration to everyone else on Saturday. If you accept the terms of registering for in-person and fully understand that we may have to go virtual, we welcome you to join us! We have a work-in-progress COVID info page here.
8/1/2020 - Full update HERE. We had a great meeting with the park and the commissioners are supportive of a live event. We will move forward with plans for an in-person race. We are setting up a new registration with the terms and waivers associated with the pandemic. We will send an email to our entire list as soon as the new registration is ready and the pre-registered athletes and those on the wait-list have had a chance to sign up. The event will be limited to 200 people per day and we expect this to sell out. All racers who register for the pandemic edition of Tri Fest will be sharing the risk with us. The risk is that while we are planning for an in-person race, the governor may change the reopening phase to phase 1 or back to stay at home orders. In those situations, we will not be able to host an in-person event. There will be no refunds or roll overs in that circumstance, but rather, we will go virtual. Please read the update and check back for information on how to register. We expect to open general registration on August 15th. Thanks!
7/21/2020 - This week we are meeting with the park and the county commissioners. There is a lot of uncertainty with the rise in cases as of late. We are considering two main options - one is a bare-bones event with limited numbers (in phase 2 this is 250 max at any time), minimal volunteers, spread out transition, rolling starts and a multi-loop course. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. We may get the go ahead now, and then go back to a stay at home order. The other option would be to roll race registrations to 2021 and then open up registration for a virtual-onsite combo event. For this sort-of-virtual option, we would mark the courses, set up the iconic finish line in Lewis Creek Park, but you participate on your own - either in Sweet Home, or anywhere in the world.
As we have said before if either of the COVID options we go with don't work for you, we will issue you a race credit for your entry and you can use that toward any of our events over the next 2 years. You can choose to make that call now by sending us an email, or wait until we have an official path forward.
Once we hear back from the county, we will send an email update to all of our registered participants and post another update here. Cross your fingers, pray, dance, do what you do to help us have a race! Thanks for hanging in there with us!
5/27/2020 - FREE WAITLIST - If you are interested in racing with us but want to wait until we know what the modifications will look like, there is the option to sign up for the free waitlist on the registration platform. We will freeze the price at the time you sign up for the waitlist so that you can confidently make the call on whether or not to sign up once we know the format for this year. The waitlist does not include any obligation, we just want to know if you are planning to race. There is a strong possibility that we will need to limit the number of registrations for the event which would likely cause this race to sell out. Priority will be given to those who are pre-registered and then to those on the waitlist. Now, we just have to wait. Thank you for your patience!
5/8/2020 - Today, Governor Brown announced that all large events will need to be cancelled or significantly modified through at least September. We are confident we can have a race in September, although it will look different than what you are used to. We are working on plans to significantly modify Tri Fest and the Linn County Parks Department is supportive of this. The courses may change to minimize volunteers and traffic control as we space out start times to distance athletes. This may mean more loops for each segment. TBD.
4/1/2020 - The COVID-19 situation is ever evolving. We do not anticipate needing to cancel Best in the West Triathlon Festival, although as you know, things can change rapidly. It is possible that we may need to modify the race this year to allow for social distancing and to meet the CDC and Governor Brown's guidelines come September. We will post updates here as we have them.
Contingency plan - In the worst case scenario (being forced to cancel) we will automatically roll all pre-registered participants to the 2021 date. If you can not attend the 2021 race for any reason, we will issue you a credit for your full registration fee to sign up for any Best in the West Event over the next two years (through the 2022 season). This credit will be transferrable and can be split across multiple events if needed. We will also allow the credit option to be used if we can proceed with the 2020 event but the significant modifications do not work for you for any reason. In lieu of refunds, which as a small business we aren't able to provide, we will be as flexible as we can and hope you will be too!
Thanks for hanging in there with us,
Blair and Staci

- Race plans for each phase of re-opening
- Course maps

Masks are required to be worn whenever you are interacting with race staff, volunteers, or are passing another athlete on course (when it is safe to do so). The park entrance is tight when entering and exiting the park on to the bike and run courses. This short section will be a mandatory "mask on" area as 6ft spacing can not be guaranteed at all times. When you finish you will need to pull up your mask before getting your medal or interacting with anyone in the finish area. If you are breathing too hard to do this, please walk away from all volunteers until you have cooled down and can approach with a mask on. Masks are not required outside of the race area.
FAQ - Does this mean I must wear my mask the entire time while I am racing?
Answer - Of course not! You need to carry it with you for the times you cannot maintain 6ft when passing and through the park entrance. You'll need your mask on from the transition area until you get out to North River Drive just outside the park. This area is super tight and we want everyone to mask up through that section. The rest of the time, just have it ready in case you can't pass with 6ft of space.

In an effort to remain vigilant in keeping our communities healthy, you will be asked to honestly answer the following questions when you arrive:
1. Do you have a fever? (We have a forehead scan thermometer to take your temperature)
2. Do you have a dry cough?
3. Do you have a runny nose?
4. Have you or anyone in your household been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has had flu-like symptoms in the last 14 days?
5. Do you have difficulty breathing/shortness of breath?
6. Do you have a headache or body aches?
7. Have you lost your sense of taste or smell?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, please do not attend group activities. Instead consult your healthcare provider about getting tested to rule out COVID-19. Please do not attend group activities until you know for certain you are not infected. Please wait at least 14 days to attend group activities if you’ve been in contact with someone who has been sick. Thank you for playing a part in keeping us all safe!

Moderate Risk - In-Person Racing
This is an overview of our current plan for the in-person race. This is subject to final approval by the permitting agencies and Linn County remaining in Phase 2 of re-opening. More details to follow in the next week, but for now here is a list of things to expect.
Because we need to limit the number of people and therefore volunteers, plus the extended timeline of a time trial start, we will need to alter some of the courses this year:
Half-Iron - Will include 2 out and backs on the bike and 2 on the run.
Olympic - Will include 1 out and back on the bike and 2 on the run.
Sprint - will include 1 out and back on the bike and 1 on the run
Super-Sprint - will include 1 out and back on the bike and 1 on the run
Mixed Team Relay, Beer Mile and Kids Splash and Dash - cancelled for 2020
Run only - same as the corresponding Tri/Du/Paddle/Aqua bike distances above
Option to go virtual now if you do not feel comfortable racing onsite. You can participate on the course of your choosing on the day of your choosing and send in your times. Many of you have gone virtual throughout the year already.
All of the above is with the understanding that this will only occur as long as we are in phase 2 and get final approval from the permitting agencies. If we go back a phase or to stay at home orders, we will go virtual. See below.
High Risk - Hybrid Virtual
“Real” Course or Make Your Own
In the event of moving back to phase 1, we will set up the course and finish line for you at Lewis Creek Park. We will leave it up for two weekends so you can come do your course when you want. You do the race on your own, following the rules of the road and entirely self-supported. We will be onsite setting out turn around buoys each morning and will cheer you on. We will have your swag with us to pick up as you come through. The medals will be hung up waiting for you at the finish. You can report your times right to us and we will put them in the system. We will have sign up times for when you’d like to come race so we can keep the overlap to a minimum.
Alternatively, you can race from home and report your times, send us photos and videos and we will mail your swag to you.
Extreme Risk - 100% Virtual
In the event that we go back to stay at home orders/extreme risk, we will all go virtual, all the way. You set and race your own course, following the rules of the road. Everyone’s swag will be mailed.
